Understanding Fire Suppression Systems: What are they & how do they work?

Our latest addition to our offering is the award winning Swedish innovation, the MAUS Fire Stixx Pro, a fire suppression system that is unique and a smart solution for extinguishing fires in enclosed areas. The MAUS Fire Stixx Pro provides many sectors with revolutionary electrical fire protection. But what are fire suppression systems and how do they work?

What is fire suppression?

Fire suppression is essentially a fire fighting system that is designed to control, contain or extinguish fires in a variety of environments. Whether that’s in an office or at home, in a vehicle or E-Scooter, etc. It’s a crucial safety measure for properties and assets, as well as a potentially life saving measure.

Fire suppression includes many different firefighting and prevention methods, such as chemical based fire suppression systems like ABC powder, gaseous systems which release specialised gases to displace oxygen, suppressing combustion and foam fire suppression systems to act as a blanket over the fire and cut off the oxygen supply.

The aim of a fire suppression system, regardless of the type of suppression system, is to stop the spread of a fire, minimise damage and improve safety.

How do fire suppression systems work?

Fire suppression systems work by detecting fires early, sounding an alarm to alert of the fire and / or automatically setting off a system to extinguish or control a fire.

The first step in how fire suppression systems work is the detection, this can be heat detection, smoke detection, flame detection or a combination of each.

Once a fire has been detected by one of the above methods, an alarm may activate to notify people to evacuate, this can include audible alarms such as sirens or voice alerts, or visual alarms such as strobe lights.

After detection, the fire suppression system is then activated, this will vary depending on the type of suppression system (chemical based, gaseous system or foam fire system). There are two ways fire suppression systems can be activated, automatic fire suppression systems that are triggered automatically with various detection methods, or manual fire suppression systems that need human intervention, such as an extinguisher for example.

Our MAUS Fire Stixx Pro activates automatically when the heat-detecting cable is exposed to a flame or when it reaches 170 degrees Celsius. The extinguishing agent consists of a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, patented potassium mix that will interrupt the chemicals in the fire and instantly extinguish it.

What is the difference between a fire suppression system and a sprinkler system?

The main difference between a fire suppression system and a sprinkler system is that a suppression system usually uses agents such as CO2, chemical, or inert gases. A suppression system’s aim is to activate before a fire has a chance to spread and keep damage to a minimum.

A sprinkler system uses heat detectors in order to know when to activate, and they could activate much later than a suppression system. They also always use water to control or extinguish a fire. In some environments water may not be a viable option like in museums for example where water could cause irreparable damage.

What is the difference between fire suppression and extinguishing?

Fire extinguishing systems are usually used to control and put out small fires, at the start of a fire or alongside another fire fighting system. They typically contain water, foam or dry chemicals and are great for smaller commercial and residential buildings, in cars and on boats. They are portable and can be manually activated by removing a pin and pulling a trigger.

A fire suppression system is mainly found within larger industrial settings such as factories or large commercial buildings like hotels and shopping centres. They are highly effective in controlling and suppressing a fire quickly and keep damage to a minimum. Fire suppression systems activate automatically in the event of a fire.

Our MAUS Fire Stixx Pro suppression system can be used anywhere, available in three different sizes with the smallest being no bigger than a Highlighter marker, the inexpensive and super-lightweight device could potentially become a permanent fixture in homes, holiday homes, caravans, offices and many more. Extinguishing electrical fires in seconds! We also have a portable fire suppression device called the MAUS Xtin Klein which contains the same potassium compound and is designed to be equivalent to a 2kg to 4kg fire extinguisher.

Why install a fire suppression system?

A fire suppression system can significantly reduce the risk of serious damage or harm that could be caused by a fire. By automatically activating via the detection of smoke or heat, you can be reassured that if a fire were to break out, a fire suppression system would be triggered, and the fire would be controlled or extinguished.

Where can the MAUS Fire Stixx Advanced Pro be installed?

The MAUS Fire Stixx Advanced Pro fire suppression system is essential to any area where electrical fires may start. The devices are small, easy to install and require no power supply. They’re a low-price investment which features a 5 year maintenance free guarantee and 6 year shelf life.
